Fong Choo
Visiting Artist Workshop
Fong Choo was at the studio two years ago for a hands on throwing workshop and we are thrilled he has agreed to come back this time teaching his glazing techniques. This somewhat unorthodox method of glazing work uses highly fluxed, reactive Mayco low fire commercial crystal glazes paired with their SW Mid Range Series of glazes fired to Cone 5-6 in oxidation. The methods that will be demonstrated are designed to create a dazzling palette of finishes.
We are thrilled to be welcoming Fong Choo to the studio once again!
Details
This workshop will have two groups of participants. The first group will come on Saturday and Monday and the second group will come on Sunday and Monday. Both groups will have demos and hands on glazing on their first day in the studio. Then we will all come together on Monday for results and more demonstrations.
You will be free to make your own pots and bring them, but the studio will provide a few pots for each participant to practice techniques in the workshop. If you do make your own pots, be sure to use a cone 6 white clay with a smooth surface.

On the final day we will review pots that have come out of the kiln and Fong will teach you additional glazing techniques as well as a few other demonstrations. If I learned anything from his previous workshop this day will be packed with information.

About the Artist
Singapore-born, American-educated studio potter residing in Louisville, Kentucky USA.
My diminutive teapots are my core signature pieces; though, of late, I’ve dedicated myself to rounds of new exploration. Vessels of interest are teacups, mugs, and as Dr. Lagerstrom described ‘eccentrically beautiful’ bowls. In concert, I’ve embarked on extensive glaze testing to develop mixtures capable of capturing the dynamic flows that occur within the kiln. My elusive goal is to capture time! They are both static and dynamic, in short: “Dwippy!”
I want my audience to acquire and use these new explorations and to embrace their senses. My quest to revisit my utilitarian beginnings has allowed me to circle back into the practice, craft, and imagination of studio clay.
I’m also a teacher having taught at both university level and in workshops throughout the world. My work has received numerous awards at The Smithsonian Craft Show, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and Craft Show and at The American Craft Exposition.
Group 1
Saturday, October 10th
10am - 5pm
Cost:
Both groups will have two days in the studio so even though Fong Choo will be here three days we are calling it a two day workshop. The price for the Two-Day Workshop will be $295 per participant. This will include use of the Mayco glazes during the workshop in addition we will provide three pots for you to glaze. If you would like to make additional items, you can feel free to bring them. If you bring pots of your own, please use a cone 6 white clay body. This technique works best on a white clay body. If it was not purchased at the studio, please be prepared to tell me the exact name of the clay so I can look it up and confirm it to be mid-fire rather than low fire. This technique can definitely be adapted to a darker clay, but for the purposes of this workshop we will be sticking to the white clay body so we can compare results on the various pots that come out of the kiln.
How to sign up?
We will be offering spots on this page beginning Wednesday, August 19th at 6pm. The sign up links will be posted at the bottom of this page once we go live with workshop signups. We will have two options available. You only need to select one. Group One will attend Saturday & Monday and Group two will attend Sunday & Monday. Both groups will be here Monday so you just have to decide if Saturday or Sunday works better for you.
Experience Level:
This workshop is for beginner 2, intermediate or advanced level potters. All of use use glaze so the skills in this workshop will be an excellent addition to any potter's skillset! If you make pots, you will be perfectly suited to participate in this learning opportunity.
